Grade 2 is a very special grade at St. Mary' s School.

Below is an overview of Grade Two Expectations and Curriculum:
Agenda We use our school agenda every day. Be sure that your child's name and address is
printed in the front. Please sign the agenda each night indicating that you are
aware of homework or any special messages. This is also a way for us to share information.
Spelling Homework is given on Monday for the week and is due on Friday.
The students are encouraged to do a little each night to help them remember
the words. Tests will be every Friday.
Religion Our curriculum includes:
The sacraments, parts of the Mass and responses, reconciliation, First Communion,
ways to pray, and the Prayer Partners project.
Language Our curriculum includes:
ABC order, types of sentences, punctuation, capitalization, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, contractions, uses of commas.
Reading of trade books and activities
Students will be assigned reading in and out of the classroom.
Math Our curriculum includes:
Math Facts-please practice 10 minutes each day
Regrouping for addition and subtraction of 2 digit and 3
digit numbers, mental math , telling time, working with money,
addition/subtraction strategies, graphs, fractions, measurement.
Handwriting Our curriculum includes:
Review manuscript during the first part of the year.
Cursive writing begins in January.
Science Our curriculum includes:
Life Science--plants, animals, fossils
Physical Science--matter, sound, magnets, light.
Earth Science--earth, weather, solar system
The human body.
Science units will be connected to our reading stories.
Science projects will be assigned throughout the year.
Social Studies Our curriculum includes:
The Berkshires, communities, Columbus, Native Americans, Thanksgiving, Maps and Geography, National Symbols, Citizenship, Government.
Reading Our curriculum includes:
Literature based--one story per week encompasses phonics, spelling, language, science or social studies.
Vocabulary words are used all week long in different ways.
Specials Physical Education: Tuesday and Thursday
Gym uniform--during cold weather students may wear a St. Mary's navy blue sweatshirt and sweatpants.
During warmer weather students may wear gym shorts and t-shirts. Please label all sweatshirts and sweatpants.
Art: Monday
Music: Friday
Spanish: Monday
Computer: Friday
Library: Monday
